Foster Care Workshops Print E-mail

A coaching course specifically designed for foster care, consisting of three experiential half day workshop modules.

Caring for others requires that we care for and value ourselves. Caring for children who may have been impaired by abuse, trauma and deprivation demands extraordinarily high levels of commitment, energy, faith, and much more. Such children have an enormous need for worthy role models, requiring the carer to have a strong belief in themselves, and a strong recognition that life is for living and learning.

I have to say at the outset this course is a guide, a recourse of established and well used practices, you know what is right for you and your child, my aim is to prompt you to think, and consider the possibility of alternative practices that will enhance further your skills and joy as a parent and carer.

Bringing up children is not easy, however as you already know the difficulties are more than outweighed by the joy of watching the children grow and develop, thrive and progress. Some of the changes you may be anticipating may be challenging. What I would prompt you to consider is that no change can be seen in isolation from the whole, i.e. a change in your child may necessitate a change in you, a change in you could have repercussions in other areas of your life. Be assured the change will have positive repercussions that will lead to successful outcomes for you and those important to you.

It is my intention that this course will be one of the best things that you have done for yourself and your children and will be extremely fulfilling for you both. My course is founded on the principle of coaching, as a coach you create a powerful collaborative relationship, which centres on your child’s situation, and their aspirations. It enables you to break down the communication barrier and create the relationship you want.

Module 1
Empowering the Foster Carer – aims to deliver an opportunity for individuals to invest in their well being and in so doing respond to the needs of the children they care for by:

  • Recognizing the importance of, and adopting, a positive framework for embracing change
  • Acknowledging what we do well, and valuing its worth
  • Raising awareness of what is important in our lives and reflecting on whether we are honouring what we value
  • Exploring how things can be improved Understanding how thought affects our behaviour and creates our reality
  • The importance of taking one step at a time
  • Recognising and valuing what difference intended changes will make to our lives
  • The impact SMART Goals have on engendering success

Module 2
Connecting with Your Children - aims to create the environment and communication to enable the carer to build a different approach and a successful working relationship with your cared for children by:

Enabling you to connect with your child by:

  • Presenting you with exercises and models to encourage your child’s learning and growth both academically and emotionally
  • Creating an environment in which you are both willing to be open and honest and share difficulties, explore options for change, and celebrate success

Creating the relationship you want by:

  • Being there for each other
  • Valuing your child’s perspective and ideas
  • Listening to them

Module 3
Building Self Esteem and Confidence - aims to raise a child’s awareness and appreciation of what they do well, and the outcome of such attributes is the foundation of self-worth.

The course aims to equip children with skills that will:

  • Raise understanding and appreciation of valuing themselves
  • Utilize their skills in visualization and dreaming
  • Prompt them to value and appreciate others
  • Stimulate an interest and understanding of the power of goal setting
  • Appreciate success or progress (there is no such thing as failure) towards a goal
  • Integrate ‘looked after’ children with the rest of your family

The course is designed to give you some ideas that contribute to the continued development of you as a parent. A parent that your child values and holds in high esteem, enabling you both in partnership to maximize your potential and live life to the full.
