From the YMCA Youth Club: "The Buddy System worked particularly well as it extended the relationship beyond the club. The Buddies were matched by the results of an exercise, which showed the predominant method by which each child takes in information and learns. Some unexpected matches were made but the results were outstanding. Another aspect that showed unexpected results was the establishment of Rules and Standards as the children made their own values and prioritised them as they desired."

- It's fun!
- It helps give children self confidence
- Goals help children to be more successful
- Children learn the benefits of setting their own rules and standards
- It helps to focus children's minds and value a buddy
- It helps children turn their dreams into reality
- Children discover that they can do much more than they thought
- Children feel better prepared to cope with school/work/other people
Foundational premise of the Goal Setting and Buddy System course:
- Everyone has different goals
- Goals need to be SMART to be successful
- Everyone has different expectations
- The same things are not important to everyone
- Everyone is unique and special in their own way
- Affirmations help to create self esteem
- It's important to celebrate success
The course is delivered as a downloadable PDF file and is split into 8 sessions. It can be expanded if required.
The objectives of each session are:
Session 1 Children identify what they are good at and are encouraged to come up with more than one or two ideas. Allow them to dream and visualise their desires and share this with the group. Brainstorm the steps necessary to achieve these dreams and how to make the first step. Encourage them to look back at what they have achieved already.
Session 2 The trainer reads a story about a teacher who asked each of his pupils to say something special about everyone in the class. The children are asked to do this for those in their group. These special values are gathered together and a sheet produced for each young person. The trainer/children turn them into positive affirmations.
Session 3 Positive affirmations are discussed in more detail. A 'I am Special' worksheet is completed to encourage the youth to examine characteristics which will build their self esteem. This also allows them to appreciate other values of their peers.
Session 4 Introduction of the Buddy System and the advantages of supporting each other in defining and celebrating their achievements. A unique exercise establishes how children process the information they receive and how they will be matched with a Buddy with the same learning characteristics.
Session 5 Rules and standards are established by the group, i.e. what is important to each person in terms of what they would expect from their peers. Having discussed each child's input the final rules are agreed and placed in order of importance by the group.
Session 6 Role-play to show what makes up a goal and the value of each element. It is important to celebrate each success. It is even more important to understand there is no failure and to look at this situation to learn from what the experience taught them.
Session 7 Another role-play to reinforce the elements required for setting and achieving goals to enable the children to be more familiar with the process.
Session 8 A review of the complete course, focussing on the key learnings for each person and a discussion as to how these can be carried into their life. Discuss how a buddy, his parents, his teachers or trainers can be involved. Present the certificate supplied.
