For maximum benefit we recommend delivering the course at the beginning of the year, repeat it at the end and encourage the parents to use the workbook as a refresher during the summer recess.
To engage the parents in the homework we provide a separate Parent Guide that includes a course outline, advice on how to support their children and the importance of their involvement.
Some of the many benefits of the Transition programme:
- It's fun!
- It helps give children self-esteem and confidence
- Goals helps children to be more successful
- Children are more attuned to their new school
- Children are coached to make new friends and enrol for after school clubs
- It helps to break through the taboos of the unknown
Foundational premise of the Transition programme:
- Everyone has different goals
- Everyone has different expectations
- The same things are not important to everyone
- It's good for children to talk to* people about their goals (* a friend, parents and teachers etc)
- Children don't have to feel disadvantaged because they feel less 'bright' than other kids
- Everyone is unique and special in their own way
- Affirmations help to create self esteem
- It's important to celebrate success
The programme is delivered as a downloadable pdf file and is split into 13 exercises. It can be expanded as required.
The objectives of each exercise are:
Exercise 1
Is an introduction to the course, house rules and some of the attributes of the group.
Exercise 2
A simple self-esteem assessment to establish a benchmark for the forthcoming work.
Exercise 3
Understanding how we learn is an exercise which establishes the predominate method of how information is processed to enable us to connect at a deeper level.
Exercise 4
The trainer reads a story about values. The children apply this story to their group. Values are gathered together and a sheet produced for each child. The trainer/children turn these into positive affirmations.
Exercise 5
Positive affirmations are discussed in more detail. An 'I am Special' worksheet is completed to encourage the child to examine their characteristics. This also allows the children to appreciate values of their peers.
Exercise 6
An introduction to setting a goal, the criteria required and showing them how they have already achieved and been successful. Another area covered is the importance of listening carefully to what is being said.
Exercise 7
Highlights the difference between self-set goals and those imposed on them. Understanding the emotions created by the different types of goals. Focus on recognising feelings and emotions and encouraging the child to articulate these and how they affect their behaviour.
Exercise 8
Further reinforcement on the importance of connection with a child's feelings and emotions.
Exercise 9
Role-play to show what makes up a goal and the value of each element. It is important to celebrate each success. It is even more important to understand there is no failure and to look at this situation to learn from it and go forward again with that knowledge.
Exercise 10
A personal resource anchor is a stimulus provided by a visualisation technique and anchoring strong positive feelings and emotions.
Exercise 11
A problem solving strategy to enable two individuals with opposing ideas to come to an agreement or find a way forward.
Exercise 12
A re-run of the self-esteem assessment to establish what changes have taken place.
Exercise 13
A review of the complete course, focusing on the key learnings for each child and a discussion as to how these can be carried into their life.
The whole programme is provided complete with teaching aids, exercises, worksheets and activities for a facilitator to deliver to a group of children for a one off fee of only £29.97 (deliverable by downloadable pdf - total 102 pages).
